Savannah Station relies on a gifted group of volunteers to make the magic happen and to keep the program operational and free of charge for our riders. Our trained volunteers provide the support and guidance necessary for both horse and rider to succeed.
Volunteers are the backbone of our program. They are our greatest source of support and a priceless resource. The program could not function without them.
Our volunteers dedicate their time and energy to the fulfillment of our mission to provide Hope and Healing with Horses. Savannah Station volunteers are caring and compassionate and have a passion for helping each individual rider achieve their highest goals of independence while providing the best support during their equine assisted service sessions.
The minimum requirements to volunteer are to be 14 years of age or older, complete Volunteer Orientation, and be ready to make a difference!
In the arena where horse and rider become one, every lesson is taught by a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor. Most every rider starts out with a three-person volunteer support team. This team is made up of a horse leader who is responsible for guiding and caring for the horse and two sidewalkers, one on either side of the rider, with the responsibility of steadying, protecting and encouraging the rider.
Outside of the arena, there are many other valuable ways volunteers help Savannah Station help our riders. Volunteers help with event planning, fundraising, horse care and grounds maintenance just to name a few. If you have a passion for this program we need you!
Volunteer Orientation is held prior to the beginning of each new riding session. The next Orientation will be held on:
May 30th, 6-8:30pm Diamond Arena 13420 Frisco Road, Yukon, OK Please RSVP to volunteers@savannahstation.org.
Every volunteer will be fully trained and equipped to perform their assigned work. No experience with horses or with special needs is required. Come play in the dirt with us! The volunteer application is found below. Please complete the application and bring it with you to orientation or mail it in and you will be contacted.
"Savannah Station is an amazing place where lives are positively impacted. From the moment you arrive at the barn you can sense the love and focus on helping others that each volunteer shares openly. And when the riders mount up there is a true spirit of teamwork, making the time well spent, giving each rider the best opportunity possible to improve mind, body, and spirit. This is one of the very best volunteer experiences I have ever had! " -Bob Smith
Savannah Station is such a special place to me. After going through COVID and being isolated working from home full-time for the past few years, I was determined to find a place that I could create relationships and make an impact. I had always loved horses and had volunteered with a Dallas-based therapeutic riding center in high school, so set out to see if there was one in the OKC area. Through a Google search, I discovered Savannah Station. The past year and a half volunteering at Savannah Station have been filled with joy and such touching moments. Seeing a rider’s face light up as soon as they enter the arena and see “their horse,” or hearing them choose to whisper “Walk on” brings hope and healing to my own heart. It has also been a privilege to be part of a team dedicated to serving our riders in whatever way best benefits them. In a world where over-prioritization is placed on success and accomplishment, I love coming to a place that redefines those terms. Each rider comes to grow and learn, but that looks different for each of them. They come as they are, with their individual needs and challenges, and the Savannah Station instructors and volunteers welcome them with open arms.Through the time I’ve spent with the riders, staff, and horses of Savannah Station – I know it is a very special place. It is humbling to be part of an organization that really does provide “hope and healing”. -Lydia Carlton
