Internship Opportunities Now Available

Savannah Station Therapeutic Riding Program in Yukon, Oklahoma, now has two internships available for College Juniors and Seniors.  
Fall Session is Sept. 1 to Dec. 9, 2022.  Spring Session is Jan. 4 to May 5, 2023.
Housing and a stipend is provided.

Applications are accepted based on postmark during the following time periods:
Fall Applications – April 1 – August 1  for the Fall Session of the same year.
Spring Applications - October 1 – November 30 for the Spring Session of the next year.

Equine Care Internship
Primary Responsibilities
  • Training Feed Team volunteers with daily barn duties, such as mucking stalls, feeding, turning horses in and out from pastures, etc.
  • Training class volunteers with grooming, tacking and warming up horses in the arena prior to class.
  • Assist with new horse evaluation, selection and training to prepare for use in the program.
  • Assist with saddle fitting, tack cleaning and organization of all equine equipment.
  • Assist with veterinarian, farrier, chiropractor and other horse care appointments and basic medical care of the herd.
  • Assist Facilities Manager with updating and record keeping on each horse.
  • Assist with property and pasture maintenance.
  • Operating large equipment such as a tractor and lawn mower.
 Qualifications
  • A Semester internship opportunity for Fall Semester or Spring Semester.
  • Junior/Senior level student pursuing a relevant secondary degree, such as Equine Science.
  • A strong work ethic and personal character and be dependable.
  • Moderate experience with horses (grooming, tacking, ground work, etc.) required.
  • All interns must be qualified as a Horse Leader, completing Volunteer Orientation prior to interning.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Able to frequently sit, stand, bend and lift up to 50 pounds, walk or jog for extended period over uneven surfaces, and physically react with agility and swiftness.
 Benefits
  • Experience working with and learning leadership skills from professionals in the Equine Assisted Services Industry.
  • Practical experience working with equines in an Equine Assisted Services industry.
  • Practical experience managing a herd of up to 20 horses, including feeding, cleaning, training, medical care and documentation management.
  • Exposure for those interested in pursuing PATH Intl. CTRI certification.
 Compensation
A stipend in the amount of $150 per month will be paid over the course of the internship.  Housing is provided.

​Program Support Internship
Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist with daily administration of an Equine Assisted Services Industry program to include outreach, fundraising and special events.
  • Assist with rider intake related to all program riders, including rider paperwork entry, new rider assessment, scheduling, etc.
  • Assist with all aspects of class preparation including lesson planning and arena set-up.
  • Support a set of riders weekly as they complete their therapeutic riding lessons.
  • Horse Leader duties including grooming/tacking equine, leading the equine for the rider, maintaining safety, and supporting the rider during class time.
  • Sidewalker duties include helmet fitting, aiding rider during mounting, riding, and dismounting to provide stability assistance and verbal prompts.
  • Reflect with instructors following class regarding rider development and improved support strategies.
 Qualifications
  • A Semester internship opportunity for Fall Semester or Spring Semester.
  • Junior/Senior level student pursuing a relevant secondary degree, such as Equine Science, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Health & Exercise Science, etc.
  • A strong work ethic and personal character and be dependable.
  • Proven leadership and relationship management experience.
  • Some experience with horses (grooming, tacking, ground work, etc.) preferred.
  • All interns must be qualified as a Horse Leader and a Sidewalker volunteer, completing Volunteer Orientation prior to interning.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Able to frequently sit, stand, bend and lift up to 50 pounds, walk or jog for extended period over uneven surfaces, and physically react with agility and swiftness.
